Hi Angie:
We are just overjoyed to have Gabby as our dog. She was a “trooper” on the way home. She got sick once about a half hour into the trip. We stopped and I cleaned it up and then I was really worried about her but she did not get sick again. She just hung out in her crate or slept and actually at one point started playing with the chew toys we got her. When we stopped for a stretch she did not want to get out of the crate so I picked her up and then she was O.K. walking around on the leash.
Same thing when we got home she did not want to get out of the crate so I picked her up and carried her into the back yard. She had fun exploring our yard for awhile. She was uncertain about coming in at first, but with a little coaxing she came into the kitchen.
She went into her crate and gobbled down ¾ cup of food and we kept her in the crate while we ate dinner. She protested with crying for a little bit, we ignored and she settled down. After dinner she just had fun exploring the kitchen and eating the stray crumbs on the floor. We all took turns sitting on the kitchen floor and she got lots of pets and love.
Around 9:30PM I took her on a walk and she really did great. She did her business and enjoyed sniffing every tree and bush and I just let her explore. We passed by a good friend’s house who has a dog “Otis” so I couldn’t resist stopping and Gabby met Otis and his family and stole everyone’s hearts.
When we walked home there were sometimes we even ran for a bit and she seemed to like that. She went into the house a little easier when we got home and I gave her a treat when she got into the crate. She cried for a bit, but when I went in the kitchen and reassured her she would quiet down.
She slept until 6:30 and then we heard her and then Todd took over for awhile since he is the morning person. Gabby went out and played in the yard with the kids – ate her breakfast and met our cats. She also met our neighbor’s puppy Rocco. I want her to continue to be used to her crate for times when I have to work or go out for a couple of hours so this morning around 9:15 the kids gave her a treat and we put her in the crate. She protested again, but is sleeping now – I think she is tired out from a full morning. As my husband put it – she is “SUPER”!!
We want to thank you for all the love and hard work you poured into Gabby. I know there will be bumps in the road as we go along, but we can already tell Gabby is truly the perfect dog for us.
I hope you are enjoying this Labor Day and I’ll check in with another Gabby report soon…
Heather
