Dear Sarah,
It's been almost a year since we adopted our Leo from MABCR last May. It seems as if his very purpose in life was to be a member of our family! He is such a loving dog and you did a wonderful job of matching him to us. You might remember that at the time we had a 1.5 year old toddler, Petra. Leo was gentle from the start and only needed a few reminders not to chase her. Now they are fast friends and he eagerly brings a toy or ball to her, drops it, and waits patiently for her to toss it over and over again. We've decided that having a BC is much easier than having a two year old and we are most appreciative of his babysitting services...he is the only one that can match her energy--he plays until she wears out, which isn't often LOL! He also has the softest mouth ever and willingly "shares" Petra's eats, taking her offerings ever so slowly. He still sleeps in his crate at night, but his chewing is down to a minimum. I thought labradors were the power chewers, but I have never seen a dog chew like Leo! He actually is the first dog for whom I had to buy the heavy duty Kongs! Leo also likes to snuggle up on the couch in front of the fire with us in the evenings to watch TV, and he also keeps the cats from thinking they own the place.
You might also remember that we have a horse farm and a serious geese problem....well we had a geese problem. As sweet and loving as he is in the house, Leo took to his geese police job with vigor and after only a few days of encouragement, he realized it was his job to keep geese away from our farm and the farm next door, over 70 acres in total! He makes his "rounds" on our farm, then heads over and patrols the neighbor's and returns, all on his own! I am not exaggerating to say that the geese don't even like to fly over our farm...he picks them up from one boundary and chases below their flight path all the way to the other side of the farm as if to say, "Don't even THINK of stopping here!" He did try to give the evil eye to one of my horses who immediately charged him, so Leo has accepted his place on the farm as below humans and horses, but above geese! He is so smart, that he leaves the ducks alone and we have a steadily growing population of mallards and other ducks.
Our labradors are aging (7,9, and 10) but Leo has breathed life into them. We have all been blessed by the sweetness and energy he has brought to our home and we cannot imagine life without him. My husband is adamant that four big dogs is enough in our little house, but I can foresee a day when we will ask you to find another BC for us. We are most grateful to you for our boy. We did get your end of year mailing and are just now getting around to sending you a donation via Paypal. Thanks again!
Steve, Cathy and Petra
