Adoption Update: Gus!

Gus and I had a play date with friends yesterday, and here's one where he's romping -- he's such a goof. Toothy, pushy, responsive, smart, affectionate, playful with people and other dogs. 75 pounds and still growing, but fortunately, coming to the end of his growth.

Thanks for the help. We're both really glad we have him. He's been a lot of fun, and a good companion.

Adoption Update: Gus

He's now Hoglet. His well-baby checkup turned him in at 28 lbs, and he's gained, I'm sure, 4 since then, nearly doubling his overall size. Fortunately, he's been able to go up and down stairs on his own for a couple weeks now.

He's very smart, very male -- he loves being outside, is shrewd about waiting as long as he can before eliminating since he knows, in this weather, as soon as he does, he's back inside. The girls (my two 11-year-old bitches, who are sufficiently bitchy to him to keep in semi-in line) initiate play with him, even tho he drives them crazy.

He mostly sleeps through the night, lets me know (very subtly with a little mystified whimper) that he needs to go out and is a lovely car companion. He's very friendly with both people and dogs (although I need to make more effort to expose him to calm small children), has had several very nice play-dates with the dogs of friends, is excited about his daily walk on a friend's farm, and can bite through leashes in less than a second.

Altogether, he's very satisfactory for a puppy.

Adoption Update: Gus (the German Shepherd puppy!)

Gus is doing really well. He's smart, willing, devilish, fun, and a pain in the ass. 
He's willing to be housebroken and gives signals (and I take him out every half hour depending on when he's last eaten and drunk). He knew what his duck, which is currently in his sleeping crate, was almost immediately. He slept all through the first night in the crate in our bedroom with a minimum of fuss, woke at 4am this morning to be taken out to pee and poop, then went back into the crate ( and I back to bed after quacking the duck a little bit, which is funny to listen to) with a minimum of fuss for another two hours. 


Both Sunday and yesterday he's walked and run with us on the farm for 2 miles with the other two dogs with great pleasure (I keep him on a long lead), has ridden with us to the pluckers and been introduced to Shirley A, and woofed protectively at Gary n the gloaming this morning when he came out to where I was with him and Rose in the back yard. He seems to understand words surprisingly well, and automatically sits to have his lead put on at the door, something I assume your son did, which is very fetching. I think he's going to work out really well.

I may be taking him for a play date today (our two old girls are not really into playing) with a friend's 2 year old poodle, and want to stop and visit Chris and Liz's kids if we can connect today.

Adoption Update: Gus!

Gus may be my shortest foster ever. Gus has been in foster with my son Matt, and MABCR Volunteer Lisa on his way here from North Carolina.

Got home with him at midnight, and he has already gone to his new forever home at 9.30 am.

And yes, he is a German Shepherd (purebred pup pulled from a shelter. Just goes to show you that if you are patient, you can get exactly the dog you want through rescue) and what a nice pup. Nancy is a lucky woman.
