Eyup! Even Famous People Work Sheep Dogs!

David Lee Roth (of Van Halen fame) shows his dogs at work, and some different phases of training and work. Apparently he trains with Paul Hacket in California. He doesn't do a bad job of explaining, and his commentary is amusing!

Documents the training of a sheepdog (in 1946). Filmed by Sid Atkinson at Ryecroft Farm, Dore, Sheffield. Narrated by Richard Farnsworth in 2009.

Not precisely the way things happen today, but a fun series to watch nonetheless!

Keeping A Close Eye On The Herd

It is really great to see a rescued border collie doing what it was meant to do! Click through for more photos and the rest of the story...

PHOTOS: Keeping A Close Eye On The Herd - Stonington-Mystic, CT Patch:

"Border collies are often credited as being the the most intelligent and hard-working breed and Tess was no exception. Owner Sylvia Murray of Alder Brook Farm in Norwich said that Tess was a rescue dog and when she brought her to the farm, the dog learned her new job in short order. "

Another little video from my friend Michelle. The sheep at this trial were tougher, hence the musical choice!

Arizona Sheepdog 1955 -- Disney Feature

Fun movie about sheepdogs from 1955!

Below is a program from 1955 called Disneyland - - The Best Doggoned Dog in the World

Disney had just wrapped up production on the movie "Old Yeller". Dorothy McGuire, one of the stars in that film, tells the audience a few key stories about the movie. Then the second half of the show is a TV airing of the 1955 theatrical featurette, "Arizona Sheepdog".

If you are only interested in the sheepdog portion, skip through to 26.30. Enjoy!

Moss and I just got back from our first trial and it was great!

The first day, I waited too long before sending him to cover the sheep after the drive and the sheep got too far too fast and headed back for the set out pen. I figured he might have trouble peeling his sheep off the fence between them and the rest of them, so I gave him one chance. He didn't push all the way through, so I called him off and retired before could get frustrated.

But otherwise it was a good run, so today, I was prepared to err in the other direction. Instead, I got it timed just right--he covered the sheep and turned them and the rest of the run was fine, including a really nice pen.

We came home with a ribbon for 5th place in pro-novice and I'm still walking on air!

In case I haven't mentioned it lately, I am crazy about this dog and so grateful to Sarah for letting me have him!
