I know...an Aerobed? Why would MABCR possibly need an Aerobed...
Sounds crazy, but MABCR hosts groups for work days/weeks and we often have more bodies than beds (yep, folks sleep over, mostly in the big house, but overflow goes into the cottage). We have slept as many as 15 here (including myself) and since the volunteers work so hard during their stay, I want to be sure everyone is as comfortable as possible.
Right now, we could use as many as 3 TWIN sized Aerobeds, and ONE Queen. The larger sized bed is not as big a need as the smaller beds, but if someone had one they were no longer using and wanted to donate it we would gladly accept.
We would like to be sure that donated beds include the electric pump....
Thanks for considering!

MABCR Will
Hi Folks. I'm Will. Will from North Carolina. Auntie Sarah told you about me the other day but didn't have a picture to show you....
I'm safe thanks to you and MABCR. I'm in foster, waiting for Auntie Lisa to take me to Auntie Sue. Then I'll need a ride from Auntie Sue to the farm. Can you help? Please?
Our planned transport day is November 3. Auntie Sue can meet someone in Cumberland Maryland. I'm not really sure where that is, but I think it is really important. Can you come pick me up and help me get to Auntie Sarah's farm? I'm told that's where I have to go to find my new forever home...
WOOF!
Will
P.S. Please contact Auntie Sarah directly if you can help get me to the farm. (SLR at MABCR dot ORG) Even partway there would really help. Thanks.
P.P.S. You can sponsor me too....

Sallie and Archie
Archie
MABCR has two new guests arriving from the south...Sallie and Archie.
Sally
What does this mean?
We need YOU!
Sallie and Archie will be arriving on 4 August at approximately 1pm in Hagerstown Maryland. We need someone willing to meet the transport, then move the dogs east, and into the waiting arms of MABCR.
You need only have a vehicle that can accommodate two dogs, at least one of them in a crate (if the other is not crated, it must be in a seatbelt harness).
You can help by sponsoring part, or all, of their medicals. It will cost approximately $100 each to fully vet each dog...
You can also help by sponsoring to help off-set the daily care and maintenance of Sallie, Archie, and the rest of the MABCR dogs....
If you can help with transport, please contact me privately...
If you'd like to help with sponsorship, please use the paypal button on the upper right hand of this blog, or mail a check to:

Thank you for considering. Without your help and support, we could not help Sallie and Archie....

Why We Trust (and LOVE) iGive.com:
Established in 1997, iGive is the first online shopping mall where a portion of each purchase benefits the shopper's favorite cause. iGive members have raised over $5 million for charities across the U.S. and Canada, and this small army of caring shoppers have become an influential force in the internet marketplace. Over 900 of the web's best stores have come to recognize the value of iGive shoppers, and this allows iGive to negotiate some of the best donation rates and exclusive coupons for its members. As an added bonus, when you shop through iGive you always have the extra support of their highly responsive customer service team, just in case something goes amiss.
HOW IT WORKS:
1. Join iGive.com to support Mid-Atlantic Border Collie Rescue. It's free, safe, and easy to join. Use this link:

2. Shop through iGive.com's online mall
The iGive Mall features over 900 trusted online retailers like Amazon.com, Staples, Nordstrom, JCPenney, Expedia.com, Barnes & Noble, QVC, & PETsMART to name just a few! You'll NEVER pay more when you reach these stores through iGive.com. And if you take advantage of the coupons and free shipping deals posted at iGive, you might even save a few bucks!
3. Watch the $$ roll in for Mid-Atlantic Border Collie Rescue!
Up to 26% of EACH purchase through iGive benefits your cause. Make that first purchase within 45 days and get a bonus $5 donation, too!
I have used iGive for about four years now, it is a great service, it helps our dogs, and it is safe (you actually give nothing, the participating stores do!)
I hope to see you at iGive.com soon!
- Sarah
P.S. iGive.com would like you to know that all the causes at iGive.com have been listed by members for their own and others' benefit. They don't endorse the causes, and the causes don't endorse them. But I DO! So, c'mon, click on that link above.

An iGive member cause since August 2005, iGive searches and purchases have raised more than $1600 for MABCR. Interestingly, the majority of this income has happened because of only a few dedicated iGive users. I can't imagine the income that would be generated if more of our supporters used the iGive service. Remember, it isn't the shopper making the donation, it is the webstore that gives a portion of each purchase...a win/win!!

Wish List
Many times each month I am asked "what does MABCR need?"
Generally I answer with whatever pops into my head, and generally, that isn't the entire list.
So, Amazon offers a Wish List option that allows us to make a real list of the things we need here at the rescue. This list may change over time, but I hope to keep it fairly well updated with thing that are needed in the kennel.
Cool, huh?

Big Day Saturday!
Saturday was a big day here at the farm.
First up was Yappy Hour.
Then Sheila found a new home. She went to live with MABCR Alum Molly. Sheila is Molly's family's third MABCR adoption! Really excited about this adoption for so many reasons!
Next up was Clint. Clinty had been with me more than a year and found his forever human. or rather she found him. She applied because of him, but never mentioned it, so I was surprised to learn that little fact when she came to meet him. Here they are out for a run his first full day with his new human. Clinty has landed well for sure.

Clinty has landed well for sure.
While Clint's human was still here getting to know him, our transport arrived with three new guests:
First out was Zoe, a lovely little girl with just enough 'tude to make a rocking good sports partner. Pulled from Kentucky, someone thought she should have a shorter tail and banded it (yes, you read that right, they used a castrating band to try to dock her tail), so it had to be surgically docked. She needs sponsorship (I am guessing a minimum total of $300, her transport was $25) to pay her vet bills in Kentucky, if you are interested in helping, please email me directly.
Next out was Banjo. Banjo is an adult with a very young mind. He thinks he is a teenager, and has a very young attitude. He is sweet and once neutered will make a great active companion. He was found strayed at a farm in the country. Banjo also needs sponsorship ($50), and of course, an adopter!
And finally, the little man with no name. I have come up with at least 100 girl names, but no boy names that suit. He is all of 8 or 9 pounds and is very sweet and a lovely companion dog. He is a papillion (mix?), I am looking forward to seeing if his hair grows. He has funny little tufts by his ears and is cute as the dickens.
Once we unloaded, the bottle kitten hopped on the transport and went on home to her foster. Once she is weaned she will move onto her forever home who is anxiously awaiting her arrival!
WHEW!! I was ready for bed at about 7.30pm that night. I slept until 6am the next morning...Can't imagine why!!!
Thanks to our expert Transport Driver Denise for helping to get all of our new guests here safe and sound.

Cookies for Puppies Oh MY!
A foster-mom came with her pup to visit during Yappy Hour. And she brought presents! We love presents!!
The Mr Clean and the tennis balls are fab (and truly appreciated), but you must all see the amazing cookies she baked for the pups. Love them!! And, so do the dogs! Taste tested, rescue dog approved! By the way, the color in the first photo is more accurate...they are pumpkin cookies! Chrisy developed this recipe over years of testing (do you think the dogs minded??) and sells freshly baked cookies to her dog-minded friends. She also bakes cheese steak flavoured cookies! Chrisy has generously offered to make a donation if people would like to order cookies from her. If you are interested, contact me and I'll hook you up with her. Thanks Chrisy!

New Arrivals...
Dogs come to us in all sorts of ways. Sometimes it is well planned, a transport set up weeks in advance, dog fully vetted, the dog arrives virtually ready to go into a new home.
Other times dogs come to us in a scramble. This little girl was found stray running by a good samaritan. The finder posted signs, called shelters and such to try and find the dog's owner with out success. They contacted one of our volunteers in the area, who in turn contacted me, and four days later the dog arrived riding in style in a crate wearing a bright pink collar.

This little one is pretty afraid. She has not been well socialised and is now decompressing in her crate, but seems to have a nice temperament and will be a super nice girl once she gets past being afraid. I'd love to get her into foster, so if you think you can handle some good, solid socialisation, let me know.
Special thanks go out the the generous volunteers who arranged to bring the pup here, then donated the funds for spay and vaccinations. We can't do our job without help like that and we truly appreciate the positive affirmations, the physical and financial assistance.
Little girl needs a name. She is about 7 months old, is shy, smooth coated, and not a big girl, I can tote her under my arm (30 pounds??). If you have a suggestion for her name, please leave it in the comments below.

Adoption Updates
A few weeks ago I asked for sponsorship help for two young dogs we needed to transport from Kentucky.

And you came through. Some generous benefactors gave so that we could pull and pay for medicals for these young dogs, and another volunteer retrieved them from the transport, while yet another took them as a short term foster while I was caring for the sick pups.

Thank you yet again for your kind and generous support. And thank you to those that give their time, and their hearts so our dogs can find great homes.

Towels and Blankets, Oh My!
It is that time of year again folks, we are in need of supplies for the kennel in preparation for the winter, especially towels and acrylic blankets.
This is something that you can help us with and it can cost you nothing! Well, nothing but a little time and energy…
Our most successful ‘collector’ posted to her local neighborhood and freecycle internet lists. She also asked church members and friends for assistance and included a list of ‘rescue needs’ along with her request for towels and boy did she get a response! She was allowed to have people leave donations at her church, and then she picked them up when she was there so they didn’t get in the way of anyone…Another collector scavenges the local thrift shop, who in turn got wind of what she was doing and now saves towels for her to give to us!
So, if you can help, please help with the following GENTLY used items:
Full sized bath towels
Acrylic or wool blankets, cut down to 6’ x 6’ or so
Fleece blankets or fabric cut to 6’ x 6’ or so
Twin sized comforters
Rubber backed bath mats in good condition (rubber must be intact)
Bound carpet squares (sample size is perfect for crates)
We CANNOT use:
Sheets, hand towels or wash cloths, curtains, torn or see through towels, cotton blankets
If you plan to collect, please be prepared with a few good sized boxes to pack things into. Please, please sort out things that we cannot use and donate them to a local source. If enough things are collected in a certain area to warrant it, I will come and collect them. Maybe geographic areas could get together and pool their resources? Feel free to use this list to network…
We can also always use the following:
Collars and leashes
Detergent (clothing and dish)
Disinfectant such as Mr Clean or Pine Sol
Brooms and dustpans, squeegees on long handles
Tennis balls, soccer balls and basket balls, we are currently in need of a couple of the LARGE (horse size) Jolly Balls with the handle.
Thanks for helping our dogs!
Sarah

The August Eight Are Coming and They Need Your Help to Get Here!
I got an email early this morning from one of the women who organises transports up to us from the south. She has eight three week old pups that need help. Mum was a border collie that was killed, dad is who knows who...
Long story short, these pups need to get here, and get here fast. The foster is over worked and the pups will be mobile shortly, which will present new issues in caring for them.
She has asked if MABCR can help, and of course I said yes...however, we need funding in order to get them here and pay for medicals. I am hoping for some help from our supporters.
MABCR must have $125 quickly (by Monday or Tuesday) for the initial transport and medicals, and an additional $700 for the remaining medicals and spay/neuters for the entire litter. If everyone that cared and was able would chip-in a teeny bit, it will all add up quickly.
Donations can be made through paypal, through our website, or by mailing a check to:

Yappy Hour at the Wine Bin -- Ellicott City MD
One of my most favorite fundraisers is the wine tastings held at the Wine Bin in Ellicott City Maryland. Owner Dave Carney and his compatriots are huge dog lovers and hold wine tastings on the first Friday of each month, with the proceeds to go to a local shelter or rescue.
The staff at the Wine Bin are great at educating on wines, and recommending great wines for you to try and enjoy.
Next Friday evening, 3 June, is the Wine Bin's night to benefit MABCR. Alec and I (and who knows who else) will be there to meet and greet. Dogs are welcome, so if you are in the area I hope to see you there!

Nice Surprises
I don't get away much. Don't get me wrong, I go out to dinner, see friends, visit people and such, but it isn't often I can get away overnight, and getting away for multiple days happens only occasionally. A few months ago I started planning to visit the Bluegrass Stockdog Trial in Lexington Kentucky. This trial is one of the most prestigious trials in the country and competitors from all across the US come together to compete on an amazing trial field. I had friends who were competing and we thought it would be fun to meet up there.
My trip came together surprisingly easily, the stars aligned and with the help of three sets of volunteers (Yes, it does take a village!) I left the farm for 6 days. Wowee-zowee, if that was not a treat! I watched dogs work, hung out with friends, played with puppies and generally had a wonderful time. I have almost two thousand photos for the week and will be posting some of them on my personal blog later in the week.
I arrived home at 2am this morning and was immediately struck by the odd sound the kennel room fan was making. I thought maybe it had been moved, but then realised that the noise it was making was not normal and it needed to be looked at. I stuck my head in the door and turned on the light, but the fan wasn't there at all, and the noise was louder than ever. I walked into the kennel area and immediately noticed a new addition to the room:
In my absence, our wonderful vet David and his wife Laura (they were here caring for the dogs for four of the days I was gone) installed a beautiful new exhaust fan for the dogs. The fan has already made a huge difference in the air quality in the room, I am so excited and our dogs are very, very grateful.
I cannot express how wonderful it was to come home to such a nice surprise. I think maybe I should start planning my next trip away...

HELP!! I Need Somebody! Help! Not Just Anybody!
Yes, I stole those lines from John and Paul (apparently, John wrote it, Paul helped to refine it), but they suit well. As my friends can attest, I am not good at asking for help. In fact, I am really bad about it. I often will wait until I am desperate to ask for even the simplest things. Not my best quality for sure.
As each new year begins, I don't make resolutions, but I do make a plan. Sometimes my goals are personal, sometimes professional. Always it is a plan of improving myself; who I am and what I do. Last year I decided I would put effort into traveling more. And I did that, making trips to North Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri and Cape Cod. I am continuing to do that this year, which is an important part of that plan, to not simply make the change for a year, but for my life.
This year is the Year of Asking for Help.
The first quarter of 2011 has brought us more dogs in need than ever. The reasons for relinquishment continue to be financial and very emotionally packed. Folks getting divorced, moving into smaller homes or apartments, being transferred overseas, or moving in with family. Pet owners can't afford to vet their pets, sometimes they can't afford to feed them. Shelters are packed to capacity and are coming to us now more than ever. I can't tell if this is because we are becoming better known, or if there are more border collies in shelters.
The numbers of young dogs in need is increasing, as is the number of aged dogs. There used to be a divide (15 mos to 3 years was our median age) but now the ages of dogs in need are across the board. People aren't just giving up dogs because they need training and exercise, the reasons are now far more complicated.
The first quarter also brought some hefty bills to MABCR.
We had to purchase a new vehicle after the Yukon was totaled. Yes, the insurance paid for the majority of the new vehicle, but there are always extras that cost.
A dog came in who needed an emergency FHO. Not something we could turn our heads to.
The Jeep needed new brakes all around. Our vollies need to be safe for sure.
The washing machine quit after a huge thunderstorm and would have cost as much to repair as a new one, so we replaced it with a brand spanking new washing machine, the first ever for MABCR (in the past, the machines have all been donated).
So, while we have paid for some of these things, it has put a hurting on our accounts, and we still owe half of the FHO to the vet, and the brakes to the mechanic, and we still have to pay the daily bills.
So, today I am asking you to help. MABCR is in need of funds to help us get through this. If you can afford $10, $50, $100, or more, please consider helping us to help the dogs. We cannot do this job without your help. You can paypal or mail your donations (please see http://www.mabcr.org/donations.php ) We truly appreciate it.
For those of you who cannot help financially, we do need volunteer help and in kind donations. More about that in another post.

Sarah and the dogs.
