Jail Break: A Border Collie Story

My wife and I wanted to celebrate our dogs first year with a great gift. We got Calypso (Border collie extraordinaire) a beautiful hand made oak super-crate. Oh how it looked with the room... What and interior design ensemble. To think that my architectural training could completely fulfill itself with such a perfect room...

We proudly put Calypso in her new bedroom. By lunch, she chewed apart her brand new crate door on its first day of service. It appears she chewed and broke out the center bar and several neighboring bars of this quite substantial oak crate. Next, it looks as though she was then able to pick the lock with her little hand and break out. For the rest of the morning she was lying up on the bed chewing the wood slats to mulch. $250 crate possibly ruined.
Our little comedian was so proud of herself. We couldn't be angry, just astounded. Here she could destroy a beautiful crate with no regard for its fine craft; but she will carefully collect and neatly stack all her toys in a very organized fashion. She is a four-legged paradox.

Not to be outsmarted... we measured her iron crate, it turns out to be a perfect fit. We removed the door and the one crate now fits inside the other. I'll let you know tomorrow night if she finds away to break out of the combined. If you're betting, we humans are 3 to 1 underdogs.

Still I love this dog deeply. Border collie ownership... a true adventure.
